Undergraduate Studies in Genetics
Genetics courses can be taken as part of many different degree programs, however most students interested in genetics would undertake a Bachelor of Genetics or Bachelor of Science degree program. Some of the many options available are listed below::
- Bachelor of Genetics (BGenet.) is a three-year degree focusing on Genetics. This is a new offering in 2009, and the only Bachelor of Genetics degree offered in Australia. This program gives students a solid grounding in genetics, and also allows specialization in key areas of genetics such as Molecular Ecology, Medical Genetics, Human Evolutionary Genetics and Computational Genetics.
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) is a three-year degree in which mostly science subjects are studied. Within this program a wide variety of genetics courses are available and you have the option of either completing two science majors (e.g. "Genetics" and "Ecology and evolution" or "Genetics" and "Neuroscience") or a double major in Genetics.
- Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours), is an exciting research-focused degree at the ANU offered through the College of Science. This degree is for intellectually ambitious students who want to study at the highest level. Every student receives intensive individual attention from an academic supervisor.
- Bachelor of Medical Science, a three year degree which focusses on the modern medical sciences.
- Bachelor of Biotechnology, a three year degree offered through the School of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
- Students may also wish to study genetics within a combined degree including Bachelor of Science. This would involve a four year degree (e.g. Science & Commerce) or a five year degree (e.g. Science & Law) in which courses are studied from both fields. Students thinking about undertaking a combined degree should get specialist academic advice. A combined degree including Bachelor of Genetics is not available at this time.
