Genetics Course Planner

Whilst students might be keen to select their majors early on in their degree, we encourage students to wait until the end of their first year. At the beginning of their first year many students do not know what majors they want to take. And even if a student does know what majors they want to take they often change their minds during their first year because they develop new interests as they are exposed to a wide range of ideas. Therefore, it is a good idea to study a broad range of courses in your first year to keep as many options open as possible.

After your first year if you are keen to continuing with genetics you have the option of taking either a single major or double major in genetics.

Major in Genetics

A major in Genetics must include a minimum of 42 units from the following set of courses:

First Year, we recommend that you take both:
BIOL1003   Evolution, Ecology and Genetics
BIOL1004   Molecular Biology

Second Year, you must include 6 units from:
BIOL2151  Introductory Genetics
BIOL2152  Advances in Human Genetics
BIOL2161  Genes: Replication and Expression
BIOL2162  Molecular Biotechnology

You must also include 12 units of:
BIAN2115  Race and Human Genetic Variation
STAT3008 Applied Statistics
Any course with a BIOL prefix
Third Year, at least 18 units of:
BIOL3131  Evolutionary and Behavioural Ecology
BIOL3138  Special Topics in Ecology, Evolution & Systematics (6 units)
BIOL3139  Special Topics in Ecology, Evolution & Systematics (12 units)
BIOL3151  Population Genetics
BIOL3157  Advanced Genetics & Bioinformatics
BIOL3161  Genomics & its Applications
BIOL3174  Research Projects (6 units)
BIOL3175  Research Projects (12 units)
BIOL3177  Advances in Molecular Plant Science
BIOL3181  Current Topics in Development and Molecular Biology
BIOL3191  Biotechnology in Context

Other requirements: All students are encouraged to take at least one Chemistry course. Students taking later year Biochemistry and Molecular Biology courses must complete both first year Chemistry courses, CHEM1101 and CHEM1102.

Double Major in Genetics

You must include 60 units from:
BIOL1003   Evolution, Ecology and Genetics
BIOL1004   Molecular Biology
BIOL2151  Introductory Genetics
BIOL2161  Genes: Replication and Expression
BIOL3157  Advanced Genetics & Bioinformatics
BIOL3161  Genomics & its Applications
Including at least 24 units from:
BIOL3131  Evolutionary and Behavioural Ecology
BIOL3138  Special Topics in Ecology, Evolution & Systematics (6 units)
BIOL3139  Special Topics in Ecology, Evolution & Systematics (12 units)
BIOL3151  Population Genetics
BIOL3174  Research Projects (6 units)
BIOL3175  Research Projects (12 units)
BIOL3177  Advances in Molecular Plant Science
BIOL3181  Current Topics in Development and Molecular Biology
BIOL3191  Biotechnology in Context
STAT3008 Applied Statistics

Other requirements: All students are encouraged to take at least one Chemistry course. Students taking later year Biochemistry and Molecular Biology courses must complete both first year Chemistry courses, CHEM1101 and CHEM1102.
